This New Series Has the Answers! A Must-Watch 4-Part Series for WSET Students, Wine Enthusiasts, and Bordeaux Lovers. In this special On the Road Edition, Stevie Kim is on a mission in Bordeaux to delve deep into the complexities of this famous wine region. Guided by Bernard Burtschy, internationally respected expert on Bordeaux, the series provides insight for curious wine lovers and an educational leg up for WSET students, unlocking the mysteries of the challenging 1855 Classification. The first episode of this 4-part series premiers on YouTube 4 February 2025, with Burtschy revealing his top favorites for the 2022 vintage.
Stevie Kim embarks on an immersive week in southwest France, in search of the history, culture, terroir and winemaking that make up Bordeaux's famous chateaux and wines.
Demystifying the 1855 Classification: Why It Still Matters Today
Notoriously complex, the 1855 Classification came on the heels of the 1855 Paris Expo, when it became clear that some sort of system was needed, as Burtschy explained, "to explain the hierarchy of the wines to consumers." Wines were ranked from 1st to 5th Growths, with five wineries receiving the prestigious 1st Growth status. In this series, Stevie Kim and Bernard Burtschy take viewers on a visually engaging and content driven tour of all five wineries, located on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, an area that is globally recognized as challenging for wine students and wine lovers alike to comprehend. With more than 40 years of experience tasting and writing about the Left Bank, Burtschy is the perfect guide for this unique wine travel series, providing structure, information and personal context as he explains and unravels Bordeaux's wine culture.
Episode One is an overview discussion of the five 1st Growth chateaux. Burtschy, introduced by Stevie as, "our Bordeaux expert and dear friend," outlines the locations of each iconic producer and the key characteristics of their wines. Stevie receives a quick wine education about the percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in each blend, how these wines compare and contrast, and the resulting unique styles of wine in the glass. The episode provides a sneak-peek at the rest of the series, including a rare tasting of a 1924 Haut-Brion and deep-dive visits to each of the five chateaux. Among other things, the first episode in the series reveals which wines from the 2022 vintage are Burtschy's top selections, what has changed in the wines between his first sip of barrel samples in April 2022 and this tasting of the recently bottled wines in January 2025, and how climate change is affecting the region.
The "Discovering Bordeaux: A 4-Part Video" Series will continue to roll out over the month of February, adding wine education value to wine travel and tourism.Be sure to catch the entire series on https://www.youtube.com/channel.
